Happy New Year!
Through our continued efforts we’re working together to find innovative ways to share our pride and support for the South Sound. As we renew many of our promises and commitments in the New Year, we will renew our commitment to the region. We will continue to celebrate and support the people, communities, and organizations working independently and collectively to improve the South Sound. As members of our community, we encourage you to show your pride by creating and sharing those stories, by posting on social platforms with #LiveLikeTheMoutainIsOut, and utilizing the creative resources on our website. Our goal is for you to make it your own, showcase what inspires you and why you are South Sound Proud!

2018 Recap
The fourth year of South Sound Together found us supporting super local projects and regional initiatives, kids in gardens and on the sidewalk to school to national traveling events. Read on to learn about these projects and more that helped make the South Sound an even better place to live and work.
In 2018, South Sound Together supported the expansion of the University of Washington Tacoma’s Action Mapping Project, which digs deep into how youth live in their neighborhoods. The project lets Tacoma high school students work hands-on with both kids in their neighborhood and with global information systems, building technical and leadership skills. The aim is to build a stronger and more family-friendly region.
Last year, we also helped bring Sue’s Tech Kitchen to Tacoma as a stop on its nationwide tour. In the kitchen, 3D printed chocolate and cereal dipped in liquid nitrogen fed kids’ brains a heaping serving of science and technology and got them hungry for more — inspiring a new generation of thinkers.
South Sound Together has also provided funding for grantmaking organizations who choose to support creative changemakers. In 2018, we gave to:
- The Children’s Museum of Tacoma, which funded people and programs aiming to make this community a better place for the next generation.
- The Grand Cinema for its Film 253 grants, which are supporting the work of a diverse group of filmmakers.
- Elements for Education’s Youth Connect: Classrooms to Museum program, which funds field trips and art projects for underserved classrooms.
We’re proud supporters of South Sound Alliance, a diverse group of leaders united by their commitment to working together to boost our larger region’s economy and quality of life. The alliance, conceived by UW Tacoma professor Ali Modarres, gathers leaders together to strategize, analyze and brainstorm possibilities to address issues important to the region, including innovative tools for economic growth and reducing commute times.
How close do you live to your workplace? Live.Work.Tacoma’s Live Close to Work Program provides financial incentives — up to $2,000 — to people who live within 3 miles of their workplace. The program is designed to reduce commute times, which South Sound Together sees as a key to improving the quality of life in our area. Shorter commutes support the local economy, reduce congestion, improve air quality and give people more time to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural richness of South Sound.
